Abstract
This study reexamines Garam Yi Byeong-gi’s rediscovery of the essence of sijo through two key dimensions: formal autonomy and everydayness in content. It explores how his theoretical perspectives were embodied both in classical sijo and in his own sijo works. Formally, Garam understood the sijo as characterized by a relatively flexible prosody and a well-ordered three-line structure, while in terms of content, he regarded it as a poetic genre that conveys the genuine emotions of daily life. He argued that when the inherent rhythm of the Korean language is harnessed to create an inner prosody, based on the generic characterisctis, sijo can remain a meaningful poetic form not only in the past but also in the present. By both analyzing these generic characteristics and composing sijo works in accordance with them, Garam demonstrated the lyrical potential of the genre. Garam emphasized that sijo must embody “real feelings and real circumstances” (silgam siljeong), a view often considered in opposition to classical sijo, which is thought to prioritize aesthetic refinement. However, if we consider sijo throughout the Joseon dynasty as a lyrical poetry of everyday life expressed across diverse social strata, Garam’s argument can be understood as a recovery of its essential nature. His discussion of innovation in sijo was faithful not only to its content but also to its form. His theory of sijo prosody, encapsulated in the phrase “structured yet not fixed” (jeonghyeong ibijeonghyeong), urged poets to compose with flexibility rather than rigidly adhering to syllabic counts. Such formal elasticity was not alien to the essence of sijo, whose prosody was never strictly regulated; instead, it followed relative patterns of syllable distribution among segments without prescribing exact syllable numbers for each line. As such, although Garam advocated for innovation, his “innovation” was not the introduction of an unfamiliar or alien form, but rather the rediscovery and revitalization of the essential qualities of classical sijo that had faded from view in his time.
