Abstract

This study aims to examine the aspects of Japan experience in modern Korean poetry with a focus on the works by Chung jiyong, Lim Hwa and Yoon Dongju during their study in Japan. Japan was an enemy country yet an advanced country with advanced ideas and culture to them during the Japanese colonial period. Especially to the poets who experienced Japan as students in the country, Japan became the background of their poems or mentioned as specific place names in their works, which can be referred to as a passive aspect. In Chung Jiyong's works in the second chapter, his days for study in Kyoto can be encapsulated as ‘a wandering life without earth to grow roots in.’ Such state of the poet's is captured in the young men who roam around the streets of a foreign country in “Cafe Prance.” The negative sentiments such as the sense of being a wanderer, sorrow and loneliness represent the poet's emotions at that time, which are expressed as rainy night streets where everything flows bleded. The poems with Japan experience that belong to Chung Jiyong's early works represent an uprooted and wandering life as well as mark the start of a poetic quest for the root, that is, ‘self.’The third chapter examines Lim Hwa's “Yokohama Harbor under the Umbrella.” This poem is Lim Hwa's representative short epic that sets in Japan. Like storytelling techniques these days, this poem tells a dramatic story to convey messages effectively. By assuming the listeners with its dialogues and talking directly to them, the technique this poem adopted is very effective in instigating the public. That is, Lim Hwa tried to contain the message of socialist class conflicts as a KAPF poet, and Yokohama harbor in the rain is the space of anger where his emotions are projected and that of resistance where ideas spread. The fourth chapter deals with Yoon Dongju's poems. In his poem, a room is the departing and arrival point in his quest for true self. Especially, the Tokyo dadami room called Yook-chup-bang in “An Easily Written Poem” is an important space for self-reflection and for confirming the poet's calling. In this room, the poet reaches a realization that the darkness in the reality makes the light of poems brighter with contrast. This way a poem is written in the harsh reality, and the divided self of the persona reaches a reconciliation. The divided self, a recurrent theme in Yoon Dongju's poem, can be guided into reconciliation only by writing poems. The aspects of Japan experience in Chung Jiyong, Lim Hwa and Yoon Dongju can be summed up as ‘wandering - the sense of being a wanderer,’ ‘exile - anger and resistance,’ ‘going under - self-reflection.’ At the same time, the different directions of wandering, exile and going under can be explained as attempts to seek for their true values as the educated during the Japanese colonial period. ‘The rainy scenes’ that are common in the poets' works, though they lived in different places and time except the common ground of the Japanese colonial period, can be paradoxically understood as a symbol of confusion to give birth to a new value.
