이 논문은 해방 전후 정지용의 글과 행적을 급변하는 당대 현실과의 연관 속에서 살피고 이러한 맥락의 연장선상에서 일제강점말기에 발표한 작품을 분석함으로써 해방 전후 정지용의 내면을 재구하고 이 시기 정지용 시의 내적 의미를 구명하고자 한 글이다. 이는 일제강점기 순수시의 한 정점을 보여주었다고 평가받는 지용의 시가 민족의 현실에 대한 의미 있는 반영으로 해석될 수 있으며, 그의 시세계가 한국시의 정신사적 지형에 매우 시사적인 지점이라는 인식에 바탕을 둔 것이다. 이 글에서는 혼란스러운 해방기 지용의 글과 행적을 꼼꼼하게 살핌으로써 지용의 내면 풍경을 밝히고자 하였으며, 이를 통해 일제강점말기 그의 시에 내장된 의식을 해명하고자 하였다. 해방 전후 지용의 시는 민족문학으로서의 시의 영토를 개척하는 데 부분적으로 실패하였는데, 이는 민족의 현실을 역사적인 관점에서 조망할 수 있는 능력과 자기-신념에 투신할 수 있는 실천력의 부재에서 기인한 것이었으며, 좀더 근원적으로는 민족의 현실을 자신의 문학적 현실로서 받아들이고 고민하는 능력의 결여에서 비롯된 것이었다. 해방 전후 발표한 그의 시편들이 보여주는 우의적 서사 상황이나 화자의 절제된 내면 등은 아무런 역사적 전망을 갖지 못한 채 현실을 견디는 지용의 불안과 고통의 내면을 반영한 것이었으며, 그 작품들을 둘러싸고 있는 고요와 적막의 감각은 역사적 전망이나 현실-투신의 능력 없이 상황 그 자체를 견디는 ‘텅빈 견인’의 고통을 역설적으로 드러낸다. 해방을 전후로 하여 정지용과 그의 문학이 보여준 무전망과 무력감, 두려움은 한국근대 순수시단의 정신 지리를 웅변적으로 드러내는 한 형상이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The statement intended to bring light on internal meaning of poems by Jung Ji-yong in that era by examining the writings and tracks of Jung Ji-yong before and after the liberation and the linkage to ever changing realities of the time and on that extension line of context analyzed were the works that he released toward the end stage of Japanese colonization to reconstruct inner side of Jung Ji-yong. This can be translated so that poem by Ji-yong which was reviewed as showing the peak of pure poetry during Japanese colonization as the meaningful reflection on realities of people at that time and started with perception that his poetic development is very suggestive point in psychological land of Korean poems. The statement intended to put light on internal scenery of Ji-yong in liberation era by thoroughly examining writings and tracks of Ji-yong in the confusing time of liberation. Poems by Ji-yong before and after the liberation filed to develop territories for poems as people's literature this was caused by missing the capability to view the reality of people in historical standpoint and the power of execution to drown in own belief and originally started in lack of capability to think and accept the reality of people as own literary reality. Allegorical description situation or moderated inner side of narrator expressed in his poems that released before or after liberation reflected inner pain and unstability of Ji-yong enduring the reality without any historical prospect and the sense of silence and stillness paradoxically expose the pain of 'tow in empty' that enduring situation itself without the capability of reality-drowning or historical prospect. Prospect-less, helplessness and fear shown by Jung Ji-yong and his literary work before or after the liberation was one of the form that eloquently exposed psychological geography of pure poetry group of modern Korea.
