Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the phonological status of onglide (i.e., [j, w]) in Japanese. Previous studies recognize 'consonant + glide' as a single palatalized consonant from the perspective of typological consequence that Japanese is allowed only simplex syllable onset. However, Parker's (2012) research shows that some languages allow 'consonant + glide' onset clusters as well as one simplex onset, so the argument that there is simplex onset in Japanese is open to reconsider. Furthermore, from the phonetic studies of Nogita (2016) and Hiragana and Vance (2018), the glide in 'consonant + glide' sequences can be analysed as a independent segment. These studies, however, have a problem with the argument that glide is a part of the onset cluster. I will claim that the glide is a part of the onset cluster based on the investigation of language performance of 'babibu language' and 'rhyming in freestyle rap'.
