Abstract
In this study, instructional design and modeling using metacognitive learning strategies were discussed especially for beginner’s Japanese level class. The study findings reveal following four points. First, it is possible to create an opportunity for learners to revitalize their cognitive process and to lead their own learning through the top-down process. Second, the listening class model presented in this study can be an appropriate tool for learners who have not taken a strategic approach to listening learning. Third, diversification of evaluation methods induced learners to actively use the target language by learning meaningful sets of language combination. Fourth, as a result, it was confirmed that the recognition of the sound of long vowels, semi-voiced consonants and geminate consonants in Japanese, which beginners feel difficult, was made in a more meaningful way than the bottom-up process learning method. Foreign language education at universities should break away from the traditional approach to foreign language learning that mainly aims at communication, and improve learners' cognitive ability to select and accept critically the overflowing information. If the awakening of metacognition through foreign language learning improves the overall learning ability of learners and communication outside the classroom can be made more positive through this learning process, foreign language education at universities will ensure its continuing existence in a desirable direction.
