Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the need to develop a new assessment tool to evaluate the Korean language skills of learners at the introductory and basic levels. And it suggests the direction to take in developing a new Korean language assessment tool. In this paper, we first focused on the fact that Korean language learners are rapidly increasing in quantity and are becoming very diverse at the same time. We also examined how proficiency levels are set in existing Korean language curricula and Korean language assessment tools. Next, we analyze the results of a demand survey conducted among introductory and basic Korean language learners and their teachers. It is confirmed through needs survey analysis that a new assessment tool is needed to check the Korean language skills of Korean language learners at this stage, and the role and purpose of the new assessment tool are also confirmed. Lastly, we would like to examine and suggest the direction in which new assessment tools targeting introductory and basic level Korean language learners should pursue.
