Abstract
This study aims to clarify what student teachers in a Japanese language teacher training program at a Korean university learn through observing mock lessons and how they develop their instructional perspectives, based on a practice incorporating One-Page Portfolio Assessment (OPPA). In each observation session, learners documented reflections on an OPP sheet, enabling the analysis of their evolving pedagogical focus and awareness. The study examined three types of written reflections: during-lesson observations (“During Learning”), comparative reflections on instructional beliefs (“Before and After Learning”), and post-observation self-assessments (“After Learning”). The results show that the student teachers perceived lessons not only in terms of lesson structure and material use, but also from broader and more educational perspectives, such as understanding learners and the teacher’s conduct. In addition, through repeated observation, they increasingly viewed lessons not as a series of isolated components but as structurally and systematically organized wholes. The process of reflection and written articulation through OPPA, along with instructor feedback, deepened their self-reflection and facilitated the structured and practical reconstruction of their instructional perspectives. These findings indicate that mock lesson observation, when combined with structured reflection through OPPA, can function not merely as a passive experience but as a catalyst for developing the critical and reflective abilities essential to becoming self-regulated teachers. The study demonstrates the utility of OPPA in transforming observational activities into opportunities for professional growth and offers implications for improving microteaching design and teacher education programs.
