Abstract

This study examines the current state of grammatical descriptions regarding the Japanese expression of desire ‘たい,’ and proposes essential grammatical information for Korean learners of Japanese. To achieve this goal, it analyzes common misuse patterns among learners and explores key grammatical aspects including the semantic characteristics of ‘たい,’ person restrictions, and constraints on using interrogative sentences to express desire. The main discussions and findings are as follows. First, from a semantic perspective, ‘たい’ primarily conveys the speaker's desire or hope. However, depending on the context and its relationship with the subject, it can also express aspirations, goals, or intentions. In polite speech, the phrase ‘∼たいです’ may sound unnatural, and ‘∼たいと思います’ is generally preferred. Second, regarding person restrictions, ‘たい’ is primarily used with a first-person subject, whereas ‘たがる’ is used with a third-person subject. However, ‘たがる’ is only appropriate when the subject’s desire is externally observable. In modifying clauses, both ‘たい’ and ‘たがる’ can be used without person restrictions. However, when the speaker describes the subject’s perspective, ‘たい’ is used, whereas ‘たがる’ is employed when presenting an external observation based on past experiences. Additionally, since ‘たがる’ reflects the speaker's judgment of the subject's external appearance and desire, it may carry a subtle nuance of criticism depending on the context. Therefore, its use in reference to a superior can be considered inappropriate and should be approached with caution. Third, in interrogative sentences expressing desire, ‘たい’ is generally avoided when addressing a superior or someone with whom the speaker has little familiarity. However, it is noted that it can be used in hypothetical contexts, such as imagined situations or references to a distant future. The study also highlights the differences that may arise when comparing this restriction with the Korean expression ‘싶다’ and emphasizes this the importance of raising learners’ awareness of these nuances. This study is expected to provide practical guidance for Korean learners in understanding and naturally applying the grammatical restrictions related to expressions of desire in Japanese. Future research will focus on a more systematic study of grammatical descriptions, particularly on areas prone to frequent misuse by Korean learners.
