본 연구의 목적은 4, 5세 시각장애 유아 2명에게 지팡이를 사용하게 하여, 연령적으로 언제 지팡이 교육이 가능한지와 그로 인한 교육적 효율성을 밝히려는 것이었다. 첫째, 유아의 지팡이 보행교육은 4세에 가능하다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 그러나 지팡이를 좌우 대칭적으로 움직이며, 적절한 높이의 호를 그리는 것과 지팡이와 발의 방향이 반대로 나가는 과정은 거의 5∼6개월이 소요되었다. 둘째, 교육적 효율성에서 보면, 유아들은 지팡이를 사용하여, 걸음걸이와 자세가 편안해졌고, 감각기술발달, 운동발달, 언어발달, 개념발달이 향상되었고, 환경탐색과 지역사회인식을 증가시켰고, 심리적으로 긍정적인 영향을 받았으며, 종합적으로 자신감과 자존심을 가지게 되었다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 4∼5세 유아에게 지팡이 교육을 시도하면 신체협응, 인지적, 심리적으로 도움을 받을 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.그러나 본 연구에서는 매우 제한된 연구대상에게 조기 지팡이교육을 시도하였으므로, 더 많은 대상들에게 본 연구결과를 적용하는 후속적 연구가 시행되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This research focuses on mobility training for two preschool visually impaired children between 4∼5 years of age using cane travel. The objective is to assess the earliest age at which cane travel education is effective and identify increase in educational efficiency from cane travel. Early results from mobility training to date indicate that, first, teaching for early cane travel is feasible from 4 years of age. But the process of swinging the cane symmetrically with creating the arcs in an appropriate height and making steps toward in the opposite direction of pointing the cane took five to six months to be accomplished. Second, increases in educational efficiency from early age cane travel include: greater comfort in gait and posture; accelerated sensory, motor, language and concept development; enhanced concept development; greater environmental community awareness; and an overall increase in self-confidence and autonomy. This research suggests significant benefits from early cane use training for 4∼5 years old preschool children, including greater motor coordination as well as cognitive and psychological benefits. Given the extremely limited number of subjects included in this research, further research should be conducted to test these early results over a broader group of subjects.
