Abstract

This study aims to propose a practical curriculum design for Business Korean based on the needs of German learners of the language. A survey was conducted on 30 students enrolled in a Business Korean course at the Sejong Institute at the University of Tübingen, followed by in-depth interviews with six learners who had experience working in Korean- or Korea-related companies. The findings indicate that learners prioritize acquiring expressions and vocabulary required for effective workplace communication. On this basis on this, the study suggests categorizing communication into three types—formal business communication, informal workplace communication, and social communication—according to communicative purpose and formality. A sample syllabus has been developed by mapping specific situations under each category. The study also emphasizes the need to present cultural background knowledge to help learners understand Korean corporate culture. Given German learners' preference for analytical approaches, combining situation-based practice with theoretical explanation is recommended. The study offers insights into localized curriculum design for Business Korean and highlights the importance of balancing practical language skills with cultural and conceptual understanding.
