Abstract

One type of lexical error observed in second language learners is misformation, which differs from native speakers' word formation in terms of lexical actuality yet remains fundamentally similar in that it reflects an attempt to name a specific concept based on expressive motivation. Grounded in this perspective, this study discusses the types and characteristics of misformation observed in a corpus of Korean language learners from a word-formation perspective. The misformations produced by Korean language learners can be interpreted not as a result of reliance on their native languages, but rather as active attempts to apply Korean word formation principles. Learners predominantly employ derivation and compounding strategies and, in part, form blends through analogical processes. Some instances of misformation based on learners' native language lexical resources are also identified, which can be classified into types such as semantic borrowing, adjustment into the target language, and word order transfer. The study aims to provide a theoretical foundation for research on lexical errors by highlighting the systematic features inherent in learner misformations.
