Abstract
In Korea, chambers of commerce started around the time of port opening in 1876 when groups of Joseon commission merchants, etc. were organized and competed with Japanese People. As the Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry was officially formed in 1884, it has been already 140 years in history thereafter. It is known that around the year of 1911, there were about 17 Joseon chambers of commerce including local groups. As such, Korean and Japanese chambers of commerce coexisted in major cities including open ports after the time of port opening. This trend continued for a while even after 1910 until 1915 when ‘The Decree of Joseon Chamber of Commerce’ was proclaimed and the integrated chamber of commerce of both Korean and Japanese merchants was founded accordingly. In modern times, the Korean commerce was concentrated in cities with an open port. Main examples were Busan and Incheon followed by Mokpo, Gunsan, and Masan, and the common representative organization in such cities was chambers of commerce. To commemorate their 100th year, 120th year, etc., booklets were also published continually. In addition, there were significant academic researches. Gunsan Port, which was the main port of the Honam west coast, was opened in May 1899. Around this time, Yeongheungsa(永興社, the merchant group in Gunsan) was founded in November 1899 in Gunsan. Gunsan merchant groups and Japanese chambers of commerce coexisted in 1907. In October 1909, Hosanggwansanghwe(湖商館商會, a group of businessmen in Gunsan and Jeonju) was founded. In February 1916, 'The Gunsan Chamber of Commerce' was organized in accordance with 'The Decree of Joseon Chamber of Commerce.’ In Gunsan as well, a series of events were conducted around the 100th year of Gunsan Port opening with photograph collections published as well. One example was 『The 100-Year History of the Gunsan Chamber of Commerce』(2009). Lately, the Gunsan Chamber of Commerce is considering to publish 『The 110th Year of the Gunsan Chamber of Commerce』including activities of major enterprises, tracing back the local commercial and industrial activities. To fill up the blank in the history of researches, therefore, this study examines the beginning and development of the modern commerce in Gunsan as a city with an open port, specifically major executives and business activities of merchants and industrialists at the Gunsan Chamber of Commerce around the 1920s.
