Abstract
The objective of this study is to fix the wrong view of the Korean native speakers on the Chinese word order. The writer puts more emphasis on the comparative analysis of the cognitive mechanism of meaning-based sentence arrangement between the Korean and Chinese than on the componential one of the syntax-based typological word order in Korean and Chinese sentences. The advocacy of the less emphasis point has long been prevalent among the structuralism and generative grammarians. This study shows that the Korean and Chinese languages have the following features: the arrangement of meaning-based word order shares the same mechanism based on the time-oriented cognitive condition under the arrangement principle of semantic word order cognition regarding the sentence components. In other words, the time-oriented cognitive conditions such as ’time sequence of incident / action occurrence, of cause and effect, and of physical experience / of the pitch / volume / rhythm of knowledge’ are sharing a common cognitive mechanism, which reflects on the daily use of language. This study will help us to reconsider the preconception: the acquisition of the Chinese language can be very difficult because of the distinctively difference of word order from the Korean language. Rather, it is more convincible that Korean and Chinese native speakers who are sharing the common time-oriented cognitive mechanism can easily acquire the each other’s language depending on the sentence arrangement of meaning-based word order.
