Abstract

Reading fluency is an important part of foundational literacy. To become a skillful reader, everyone must read fluently. However very little research has been done to investigate elementary students’ development of reading fluency in the area of elementary Korean education. In this study, the development of reading fluency among first-year elementary students was explored. For the study, 19 first graders participated in the research and data collection was done four times using ‘Reading Fluency Inventory’. According to the results, their level of automaticity was at the level of reading 63 words on average. Their accuracy corresponded to the level of ‘instructional’, indicating that it may be difficult for them to understand texts appropriately on their own. Their level of prosody remained at level 2, indicating that they needed additional support. Overall female students were more fluent than their male counterparts in all three factors. Research interest in the development of reading fluency of elementary students is required.
