Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the viewpoint of humanity of Hitler and national socialists which was revealed in various political ideologies and social policies pursued by Germany's Third Reich and to criticize such viewpoint from Christian ethicality standpoint. At the time, dictatorship served the basis for Germany's domestic and foreign policies centering around the ideology of national communities, anti-Semitism, living space ideology, racism and social Darwinism. Some of the major results of this study were as below: First, Hitler and his followers committed the war of aggression and genocide against other peoples and nations on the basis of the shallow-minded elitism formed by selfish group consciousness. However, the Biblical view of humanity pursues mutual respect, inclusive and open communities in a peaceful relationship, rather than exclusive, rejective, or hostile attitude for reason of ethnic or racial backgrounds. Second, Hitler and national socialists committed national crimes of massacring hundreds of thousands of people with mental illnesses and disabilities as 'worthless lives' based on economic value, as well as slaughtering a lot of Jews based on eugenic racism. However, the Christian viewpoint of humanity is based on dignity and noble value of human beings and basically supported by the twin pillars of the order of creation and salvation ministry in the infinite love and providence of God, not the conditional and relative concepts claimed by the Hitler's dictatorship or philosophers. Third, Hitler and national socialists massacred myriads of human beings, destroying the nobility of human life, and even committed suicides in seeking final resolutions of various problems such as conflicts, disputes, etc., as they considered the ‘death’ as extinction based on their belief in materialism or atheistic existentialism. However, the Bible attributes the death to the sin of human beings and declares that there is the strict judgment by God after death. In addition, the life in this world and the life after death are linked by interrelationships. Particularly, the act of taking away the life, whether it is one's own life or other person's life, is considered a serious challenge to the Creator who is the Master of life and is regarded as a serious sin because human beings were made in the image of God. Finally, the utilitarianism or secularism have been coming to the fore gradually these days in coming to grips with social issues associated with life ethics, such as euthanasia, artificial abortion, capital punishment, suicide, etc. Constant discussions and study would be very imperative, which aim to restore the distorted humanity and human dignity by criticizing the spirit of the times, where the life, existential value and meaning of human beings are judged increasingly from the prism of rationality, economic feasibility, and productivity, based on the Christian viewpoint of ethicality.
