도시의 삶과 유비된 지구적/다문화 사회의 윤리적 덕목들

오늘날 삶의 질서는 전지구적 다문화적 환경으로 변화하고 있다.이런변화는 우리에게 문화적 정체성과 젠더,인종,민족,계급이 맞물리는 다양한층위들에서 기존의 방식과는 다른 어떤 윤리적 실천들이 가능한지,다문화적사회에 참여하는 행위자들에게 요구되는 덕이 무엇인지 재검토할 것을 요구한다.이 글은 안정적인 가치와 확실한 정체성의 기반 위에 있는 않은 행위자가자기 성찰적 태도와 타자와의 소통하는 과정 속에서 타자와 관계 맺기 위해 필요한 몇 가지 덕목을 제시한다.‘덕’은 단지 인품적 속성이나 개인의 도덕적 능력만은 아니다.덕은 사회적 질서에 참여함을 통한 끊임없는 반복적 실천을 통해 체현되는 것으로서 덕은 개인적 사회적 차원의 상호작용적 구성물이다.그러기에 어떤 삶의 환경을 전제하지 않고 제시되는 덕목은 공허할 뿐 아니라 그실천적 효력을 발휘할 수 없다.이 글에서는 지구적/다문화적 환경을 도시적삶의 경험과의 유비를 바탕으로,‘ 도시의 삶’이라는 규범적 이상 속에서 실천되어야 할 시민의 덕을 지구적/다문화적 사회의 윤리적 덕목들로 제안한다.
Abstract
The order of life is changing along with the changes in our environment. The present global/multi-cultural condition asks what kind of virtues are required of the participants of this global/multi-cultural society and what kind of ethical practices are more accessible in this situation of contesting heterogenous cultural virtues. This article suggest several virtues necessary for the citizens, who are unstable and uncertain in their identity, to self-reflect, communicate with others, and have connection with others.‘Virtue’is not just a personal character or a moral capability. Embodied through repeated performance of social convention,virtue is also a social construction emerged through the interaction of the personal with the social. Virtue is empty without a practical context, and hence has no practical effects. In this paper ‘city life’is given as a practical context and from that context several ethical virtues are suggested for citizens to practice in a global/multi-cultural society.
