Abstract

Aristotle claims that deliberation as a search for things that contribute to an end is restricted only to human beings. The aim of this article is to explore this concept of deliberation in Aristotle’s moral psychology. After clarifying his view on the scope and form of deliberation against the background of the traditional dispute surrounding it, I turn to two related questions: 1) what are the cognitive functions that count as essential factors of deliberation, as Aristotle understands it? And 2) how can Aristotle be justified in denying the deliberative capacity to non-human animals? In answering these questions, I focus on the calculative capacity, the working of which involves cognitive functions such as phantasia, recollection, and opining. According to Aristotle, these functions – including even opining – are common to human beings and other animals. However, there is an essential difference in how they are activated. In human beings, once triggered by thought, these functions are realized as calculative phantasia, calculative recollection and opining through reasoning, thereby bring forth deliberation. So, from the perspective of Aristotle’s moral psychology, deliberation is a searching process for a choice that consists in the work of calculative capacity involving the manipulation of phantasia, the retrieval of past experience and the forming of an opinion through reasoning. Non-human animals are lacking in this process because their cognitive functions are active only in connection with sense perception: they have nothing other than sensitive phantasia, associative recollection and opinion without reasoning, which explains why Aristotle excludes deliberation in non-human animals. One might raise a question to what extent the Aristotelian concept of deliberation really works in explaining animal intelligence. Whatever the answer, however, two things are clear. Aristotle has a well-defined concept of deliberation, and his restriction of it to human beings is well-justified.
