레비나스와 페미니즘은 불화할 수밖에 없는가? 이 논문은 레비나스와 페미니즘을 조우시키려는 기획의 첫 번째 단계에 해당하는 것으로서, 레비나스에서 여성의 문제를 검토하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 일군의 페미니스트들은 레비나스의 사유가 여성을 남성의 보충물로 전락시켰으며 여성적인 것을 무의미한 것으로 취급하고 있다고 비난한다. 이에 반해 어떤 페미니스트들은 레비나스의 철학이 페미니즘이 비판하는 서양의 철학적 전통을 정확히 겨냥하고 있으며 그의 일련의 작업들이 오히려 페미니즘이 내고자 했던 바로 그 목소리라고, 더욱이 레비나스의 타자 철학이 페미니즘에 새로운 지평을 제공할 수 있다고 주장하기까지 한다. 상호 모순되는 것처럼 보이는 일련의 견해들이 내세우는 바와 그 주장의 정당성을 적확하게 파악하기 위해서는, 궁극적으론 레비나스와 페미니즘 간의 대화를 시도하기 위해서는 그들의 주장과 직접 대면하기에 앞서 레비나스의 논의를 그 맥락에 비추어 이해하는 일이 요구된다. 이런 일이 전제되지 않는다면, 레비나스에 대한 페미니스트의 비판도, 그 비판에 대한 레비나스 연구자들의 대응도 피상적이거나 일면적인 것으로 그칠 공산이 크다. 이에 우리는 여성이란 개념이 레비나스의 논의에서 어떻게 사유되고 또 사용되고 있는지를 검토할 것이다. 물론 이런 일은 간단치 않다. 이 개념이 다른 주요한 주제들과 연결되어 있기 때문이다. 우리는 레비나스의 여성 개념이 그 의도상의 일관성에도 불구하고 변이되고 있음에 주목하여, 그의 작업을 초기, 중기, 후기로 나눈 후 각각의 시기에서 여성이 갖는 역할과 그내용을, 다른 주요 주제들과 관련시켜 살펴볼 것이다.
Abstract
What reason is it that Emmanuel Levinas’s work has received so many feminist’s concern? This paper is the first attempt to encounter Emmanuel Levinas with Feminism. The aim is to examine the problem of ‘woman’ in Levinas. A few feminists argue that Levinas’s thoughts degrade woman to a completement to the masculine or a incomplete man. On the contrary, other feminists argue that his discourse gives a new vision to feminism and his vision equals with the voice of feminism, after all Levinas’s work of the Other provides feminism with a voice that many feminist have sought. Here I will discuss of the role and the nature of ‘woman’ or ‘the feminine’. Tracking the idea of the concept is complicated by the fact that it is connected with other important themes. This paper will divide his works into three times, that is early, middle, final works. And we will investigate the role and the content of the woman or the feminine in each case, then compare the difference and the similarity of the notion in that. To sum up, the woman in Levinas’s early philosophy is discussed concerning eros, in middle philosophy is discussed concerning dwelling, in final philosophy is discussed concerning maternity.
