과학적 실천이론과 페미니스트 과학기술학의 접점 : 캐런 바라드의 경우

초록

성차별주의나 남성중심주의의 온상이었던 과학적 실천들에 대해 그간 페미니스트 과학기술학이 페미니스트 비판을 통해 이뤄낸 연구 성과에 대해서는 상대적으로 많은 조명을 받으면서 논의가 이루어졌었다. 하지만 사회구성론적 경향이 강했던 이런 비판 과정에서 시작하여 페미니스트 과학기술학자들이 과학적 실천에 대한 독창적 시각을 가지고 과학기술학의 실천적 전환에 기여한 업적은 크게 주목받지 못했다. 이 연구는 과학기술학에 대한 캐런 바라드(Karen Barad)의 기여를 중심으로 페미니스트 과학기술학 발전과정의 한 흐름을 과학기술학의 실천적 전환의 맥락에서 살펴보려는 것이다. 논의는 다음 세 가지로 이루어진다. 첫째, 실천이론과 과학적 실천이론을 간략히 소개한 후 그것이 페미니스트 과학기술학 및 정치학과 어떻게 서로를 재구성하면서 발전하게 되었는지를 설명한다. 둘째, 바라드의 과학적 실천이론을 바라드가 도입한 현상, 장치, 회절, 내부적-상호작용 개념을 통해 상세히 설명한다. 그리고 이 과정에서 바라드의 포스트휴먼 수행성이론이 어떤 방식으로 푸코와 버틀러의 실천이론을 창의적으로 확장하였는지 살펴보며 그것이 페미니스트 정치학에 주는 함의를 분석한다. 셋째, 바라드의 행위적 실재론을 실천이론과 그로부터 도출되는 행위자모델의 틀 속에 위치시켜 평가한다. 이 과정에서 새롭게 드러나는 행위적 실재론의 함의가 페미니스트 정치학에 어떤 새로운 방향을 제시하는지 분석한다. 마지막으로 바라드 이론이 가지는 한계와 그 한계를 극복하기 위한 방향을 최근 인지과학의 논의에서 제시한다.

Abstract

Feminist STS and scientific practice theory have benefitted from each other through their close encounters. This work analyzes Karen Barad's contributions to feminist STS focusing on her theory of agential realism which epitomizes fertile theoretical relations between two fields. I start with a brief introduction to practice theory and its theory of scientific practices emphasizing their affinities and implications on feminist STS and politics. Then I move on to the detailed analysis of Karen Barad's theory of scientific practices examining the key concepts of her theory such as phenomena, apparatus, diffraction, and intra-action. Along the way, I show how she creatively extended the works of Foucault and Butler through the theory of posthumanist performativity and analyze its implications on feminist politics. Then I examine her theory from the perspective of practice theory and the actor model that naturally follows from the latter. This allows fuller and better understanding of her agential realism and also its limits. I conclude my analysis by suggesting a way of improving her theory by incorporating recent developments in cognitive science.
