Abstract
Aristotle calls his ideal polis a “polis according to prayer” in Books 7 and 8 of the Politics, but does not specify its constitutional form. Scholars have disputed whether Aristotle’s best constitution is a kingship or an aristocracy or a mixed polity, or a democracy. However, I think that Aristotle’s best polis should be approached in a different way in opposition to the so called traditional classification of constitutions. It means that Aristotle’s best constitution has to be understood as the ‘natural aristocracy’ which corresponds to the natural polis in describing in Politics I from the perspective of the political naturalism. To make a case for this, I examine the end (telos) of the best polis and its political and social structure and principles. Especially, I try to demonstrate the goal of the best politeia in focusing on the philosophical life as well as political or moral life. Accordingly, I argue that Aristotle’s polis kat’ euchēn can be called the ‘natural aristocracy’ that is based on two elements, i.e., human nature (physis) and virtue (aretē) for the living well (eu zēn).
