Abstract

The Historical Meaning of the Joseoneohakhoe (The Korean LanguageSociety)Activities in the Colonial Period; Choi, Kyeong-bongThe purpose of this paper is to clarify the historical meaning of the activities that were caried out by ‘Joseoneohakhoe’ in the colonial period. In chapter 2, I explained the history 일제강점기 조선어학회 활동의 역사적 의미 433of language arrangement in Korea. And I emphasized that Joseoneohakhoe’s identity succeeded to ‘Ju Sigyeong’ and Korean Research Institute that was founded in the age of Korean Empire. In the process of this discussion I criticized the viewpoint that the language modernization and the national language movement were composed by ‘Joseonchongdokbu’(the government-general in Korea). In chapter 3, I examined the language standardization(the compilation of dictionary, the standardization of the spelling rule, the establishment of the standard language)that was performed by ‘Joseoneohakhoe’, and I maintained that ‘Joseoneohakhoe’ aimed to take the leadership in this works and to establish Korean language as the official language in Korea by the language standardization. It was evident that this activity was a kind of the resistance in the colonial period. In chapter 4, I examined the language policy of ‘Joseonchongdokbu’ and the activities of ‘Joseoneohakhoe’ that cope with the language policy of ‘Joseonchongdokbu’.
