Abstract
This study examines the features of the Korean in Japan, which were situated in the relationship of Empire and colony, and the relationship between masculinity and femininity of the Korean in Japan, focusing on the issue of masculine freak shown in the novel, Blood and Bone. For the purpose of this study, three analyses are done. First, it is revealed that the Korean consciousness in the novel did not preexist prior to coming to Japan but formed in the process of sensing itself as the other being oppressed by empire Japan. The Korean consciousness is melancholic in that the consciousness existed under the exclusion of Korea or Korean state. Second, it is shown that how the masculine freak causing threat and horror is coined is analyzed and the masculine freak is an abject disturbing the border between state and nation and between human and animal. it is implied that Kim, Joon-Pyong, the leading character in the novel, becomes masculine freak as castrated politically under the life of the others as Korean in Japan. Finally, this novel reenacts the relationship between Empire and colony through highlighting the relationship between male and female, starting with the life of Korean women in Japan. In the novel, Blood and Bone, femininity degenerates into sexuality or a maternal instinct extremely. However, both of them are captured by the masculine freak. This masculine freak reenacts the image of Imperialism oppressing colony, objectifies women as the object of the oppression and reproduces power and violence of Imperialism. The novel, Blood and Bone by Yang, Sek-Il, shows us how and why the Korean in Japan try to copy violence of Imperialism and oppress the others. And the novel debunks madness and violence of Imperialism, through the copying and oppression. However, the meanings of the debunked are ambivalent in that the debunker reproduces the image of brutality and violence by colonial masculinity without assuming a critical attitude.
