Abstract

The central ideology of the 1960's that was the beginning of the modernization was the agricultural modernization or the rural modernization. It was the governmental media including 『New Farmer』 that was intended to support this ideology or discourse of rural modernization. And it was the figure of the heroic rural leader that functioned as the core of the discourse that disguised the rural modernization from the reality that the industrial or urban modernization was the main stream of that period. The figure of the heroic rural leader who is far from the idleness and ignorance was the core discourse that supported the ideology of the rural modernization. It was the most powerful means that could make government escape from the moralㆍpolitical responsibility while shifting it on the rural people on the contrary. This article, on the one hand, treats the novels that repeat the discourse of the rural modernization in the governmental media of 『New Farmer』, and on the other hand, will see that while writing novels in this magazine and some serious media at the same time some writers are criticizing the discourse of the rural modernization directly or indirectly. This problematic novels contain the discourse of the rural modernization and the discourse of the urban problems fully or partly at the same time. This was the result that the contradictory reality of the unique 1960's was reflected consciously or unconsciously that the agricultural or rural modernization was issued as the prevailing discourse although the industrial or urban modernization was powerfully driven. The novel that contains the unique critical mind of this reality is the 'rural/urban novel'.
