Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the memoirs from the New Village Movement of the 1970s with novels from the colonial period, such as Lee Kwang-soo’s Soil(흙, 1933), Sim Hun’s Evergreen(상록수, 1935), and Li Ki-yeong’s Hometown(고향, 1934) and Virgin Soil(처녀지, 1944). The peasants of the New Village Movement had a spirit of self-reliance that enabled them to achieve development through the renewal of rural communities. Novels such as Soil also presented self-reliance as a principle of rural reform. But did this spirit of self-reliance actually cause peasants and rural places to survive healthy as communities? In the colonial period, the self-reliance of rural towns was considered necessary to mark out the territory of the nation(민족). ‘Heo sung’(Soil)’s efforts to make ‘Salyeoul’ a healthy community can be read as an imaginative statement about the nation-reform (민족개조) project discussed by Lee Kwang-soo. But the dream to renew rural communities through self-reliance to the extent permitted by ‘the organization of society’ at that time, could not help but be subsumed by the mobilization project of Japanese empire. If renewing rural communities were to be subsumed under the publicity of the state apparatus for total mobilization, ‘Heo sung’ cannot avoid becoming an agent acting for state enterprise. Li Ki-young’s Virgin Soil expressed the idea of building an agrarian gemeinschaft as a special alternative space, but the development contrived by ‘Nam Pyo’ was a way to include Korean peasants from inland Manchuria in the Japanese empire. Nam Pyo’s utmost devotion to the development of rural communities turned to devotion to the state, seemingly because of the idea that the space of innovation was bound to be sanctioned by the state, therefore, it needed to be guaranteed by the state. Because the community that Nam Pyo tried to build was belongs to the state, his strict and serious figure realized the absoluteness of the state rule. The structure that situated the innovation of rural communities and of the state as a part of a larger whole were, in certain respects, echoed in the New Village Movement, which demanded that rural society construct a total system within the state by strengthening its spirit of self-reliance. Memoirs from the New Village Movement of the 1970s showed the process by which peasants and movement leaders could again membership in the state and elevate their status by adopting the point of view of leaders who put forth initiatives. It follows that, if new peasants in new villages had to escape their disadvantaged positions and take on new positions as members of the state, their desires could not retain a rural character in these narratives. Furthermore, because the development of rural areas could not go against the course of industrialization that characterized the development of the state, self-reliance could not be the way to maintain rural areas as healthy communities.
