이 글은 자연발생적 사건을 나타내는 피동문의 형태․통사․의미론적 특성을 살펴봄으로써, 자연발생적 사건을 나타내는 피동문이 반사동 구문의 특성들을 보이는 것을 확인하였다. 즉 자연발생의 의미를 나타내는 피동문은 형태적으로 동사에 피동 접사가 결합되어 있고 통사․의미적으로 행위주 논항이 존재하지 않으며 의미적으로 저절로 발생한 사건을 나타낸다는 점이 반사동 구문의 특성과 유사하다. 따라서 한국어에서 ‘자연발생’의 의미를 나타내는 비전형적 피동문은 구문적으로 ‘반사동 구문’과 유사하며 의미적으로 ‘자연발생’의 의미를 지님을 알 수 있었다. 또한 ‘전형적 피동문’과 ‘자연발생의 의미를 나타내는 비전형적 피동문’을 구분할 수 있는 기준으로 삼을 만한 것들에 대한 가능성을 검토하였다. 그 결과 ‘전형적 피동문’과 ‘자연발생의 의미를 나타내는 비전형적 피동문’의 가장 큰 구분 기준은 ‘행위주의 유무’에 의한 것이며, 행위주의 유무의 판단은 ‘맥락 의존적’일 수밖에 없다고 보았다. 그 외에 동사의 어휘 의미를 고려하거나 주어 명사의 유정성을 고려하여 의미를 구분할 수는 있으나 이는 절대적인 구별 기준이 되기는 어렵다고 보았다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the morphological, syntactic, and semantic properties of passive constructions, which are spontaneous events. The passive construction expressing the meaning of ‘spontaneous’ is a type of construction that expresses an event which occurs on its own without an actor. It is examined that this construction has similar characteristics in terms of morphological, syntactic, and semantic with ‘anti-causative’. In addition, I examined the possibilities of what could be used as a criterion to distinguish between ‘typical passive’ and ‘atypical passive expressing spontaneous events’. As a result, the biggest criterion is the ‘presence of agent’. The judgment of whether there is an agent or not in a passive construction is a context-dependent one. In other criterion, there is a way to take into account the meaning of the verb and to consider the animacy of the subject noun.
