발전론․목적론적 역사인식에 근거한 서구중심주의(eurocentrism)와 근대중심주의(modernocentrism)에 지배된 이후 ‘서구’와 ‘근대’는 우리가 발전하기 위해 추구해야 할목적이 되었다. 반면, ‘비서구’와 ‘전근대’의 시간과 경험은 어둠과 미몽의 그것으로 낙인찍힌 채 단지 ‘서구’와 ‘근대’의 진보성을 가능하게 만드는 장식품 정도로 전락했다. ‘비서구’나‘전근대’는 근대 이후의 역사 전개과정, 그리고 근대 이후 인류가 당면하게 된 다양한 문제의 해명과 관련하여 발언할 여지가 거의 없었다. ‘탈근대’에는 여러 가지 경로가 있겠지만, 근대중심적 인식에 대한 비판과 그를 통해 근대를 상대화하는 일이 긴요하다고 생각한다. 이 글은 이를 위해 역사적 시간을 넘나드는 트랜스히스토릭한(transhistorical) 방법을 제안하였다. 서구중심적․단선적 발전론과 결합된 자국중심적․일국사적 시각을 교정하기 위해‘국경을 넘나드는’(transnational) 접근이나, 비교사적 접근의 필요성이 제기되어 왔다. 마찬가지로 근대중심적 인식을 넘어서는 데는 ‘시간을 넘나드는’ 접근, 그리고 전근대와 근대를비교하거나 서로 연결하여 이해하는 접근이 유효하다고 생각한다. 이를 통해 ‘중세’ 혹은 ‘근대’가 하나의 통일되고 동질적인 시간이 아니었음을 드러내는 것이 중요하다. 또한 서구중심주의를 극복하기 위해 비서구로부터 서구를 바라보는 역전된 시각이 요청되듯이 전근대로부터 근대를 바라보는 것, ‘전근대’의 관점으로부터 ‘근대’에 관한 질문들을 도출해내는 것이 요청된다.
Abstract
Since the domination of eurocentrism and modernocentrism based on developmental and teleological history recognition, ‘western’ and ‘modern’ have been our goal that we need to pursue for the development while the experience and time of ‘non western’ and ‘pre-modern’ have been branded as those of darkness and illusion, so the role as rhetorical expression which enables the progressivity of ‘western’ and ‘modern’ was only given. ‘Non western’ and ‘pre-modern’ have had few room to speak related to the historical development process since the modern era and the explanation of various problems which human race faced since modern times. ‘Postmodernism’ might have many channels but it is considered that it is important to relativize modern through the criticism on modernocentric recognition and itself. For this, the transhistorical method crossing historical time was suggested in this writing. The necessity of ‘transnational approach or comparative historical approach has been brought up in order to correct the view of nationcentrism and self-centered history combined with eurocentrism and one-sided development theory. Likewise it is considered that the approach of comparison and connection between pre-modern and modern for understanding, and ’time crossing’ approach are effective in order to overcome the modernocentric recognition. It is important to reveal that ‘middle ages’ or ‘modern’ is not an unified and homogeneous time. Also as the reverse view for western from non western is required to overcome eurocentrism, it is also requested to draw the questions on ‘modern’ from the view of ‘pre-modern’, and to view ‘modern’ from ‘pre-modern’.
