Abstract
This paper critically examines the desire for genre division and construction within the domain of poetics and rhythm theory using Park Seul-gi’s research, The Origins and Experiments of Korean Modern Free Verse: From Choi Nam-seon to Kim Eok (Somyeong Publishing, 2024), as a central reference. Criticizing the ‘zero sign’ effect of ‘musicality’ in former linguistic access to rhythm, Park Seul-gi’s study attempts to reconstruct rhythm theory as a matter of lyric communication between self and speechless others, which she calls as ‘rhythm theory as a poetics’ beyond linguistics. However, her poetics-rhythm theory itself also could be criticized with the concept of ‘zero sign’ as the two key words of the theory ‘rhythm’ and ‘lyric poetry’ are basically works not differently from ‘musicality.’ This paper analyzes the desire for genre division and construction in poetics as a background for the turn in rhythm theory, which, rather than proposing a new direction, merely repeats the sign effect. It critically examines the self-fulfilling narrative method embedded in the scholarly desire of modern ‘academia’ while reflecting on the fundamental limitations of modernity. In conjunction with this reflection, this paper seeks to preliminarily explore a genre-theoretical method that may highlight the performative aspect of the modern scholarly act of ‘poetics’ or ‘literature.’
