Abstract
This study explores the reconfiguration of the Korean literary translation field in the 1980s by examining the translation and publication of canonical works of Chinese Red Literature, including 『Protect the Coast』, 『Red Sun』, 『Song of Youth』, 『Red Rock』, 『Great Changes in the Mountain Village』. Written from the ideological standpoint of the Chinese Communist Party, these novels depict the heroic endeavors of revolutionary figures who contributed to the consolidation of socialism. During the Cold War, anti-American and anti-national party(國民黨) content was unpublishable in South Korea. The publication of Red literature since the 1980s is an aspect of the post-Cold War transformation of Korean translation sites. During this period, these novels was accepted in connection with Korean popular movements. It was recognized as a kind of narrative of transformation about the Korean situation, not as an inspiration or appreciation of the original content itself, and was read as a priori narrative of revolution and popular victory. As such, the canon of Red literature and a series of revolutionary hero realism novels, which were introduced intensively in the 1980s, encountered keywords such as people, revolution, citizens, and participation that were most important in the Korean discourse, and prepared to resume translation of Chinese literature in earnest. In addition, it could be used as a reference to understand the stories of the Chinese people in communist countries that have not been properly encountered due to ideological debates and the appearance of Chinese society since the establishment of New China(1949).
