Abstract

This article examines how North Korean literature was incorporated into and recontextualized as world literature through the Chinese journal World Literature between 1953 and 1966. Serving as a central node in the PRC’s socialist world literature project, World Literature admitted North Korean texts through multiple routes: direct translations from local periodicals and books, commissioned contributions, materials supplied via diplomatic and visiting delegations, and the reprinting or adaptation of existing Chinese versions. Recontextualization was then consolidated through a robust paratextual apparatus—editors’ notes, translators’ afterwords, reader responses, and critical essays. Editorial selection and placement clearly followed ideological criteria—patriotism, class orientation, and people-centeredness—yet the journal also sought to temper doctrinal rigidity and preserve aesthetic autonomy, for instance by foregrounding lyric poetry by Kim Sowol and Pak Palyang. Thematically, narratives of anti-Japanese resistance, the Korean War, socialist construction, and friendship underwrote an imagined ideological community. Through this mediation, North Korea appears as a partner in anti-imperialist struggle and socialist nation-building, while South Korea is cast as a prospective subject of liberation and solidarity against U.S. imperialism. In effect, the stark North-South binary is partially reframed within an anti-imperialist, anti-colonial horizon as coexisting—if asymmetrically positioned—targets of inclusion. World Literature’s curation thus illuminates the politics of cultural translation within the socialist bloc during the Cold War and exemplifies a literary experiment negotiated at the boundary between ideology and aesthetics.
