Abstract

This study aims to examine the character construction of Bang Gwan-ju in Banghanlimjeon and the narrative meanings that emerge within the structure of the sky and ground realms. In the text, Bang Gwan-ju is not defined as a fixed entity, but rather as a being in constant performativity. Her unfixed, fluid nature is also reflected in the configuration of the sky and ground realms. Accordingly, this paper argues that Banghanlimjeon operates according to a narrative principle of “-ing,” or continuous performativity. Bang Gwan-ju possesses both a body that is subject to signification and a body that reveals the incompleteness of that signification. These two bodies constitute one another while simultaneously pointing to the impossibility of fully establishing each other. Banghanlimjeon presents only the moments in which Bang Gwan-ju acts—repeating cycles of signification and incompletion that arise from her mode of existence as ongoing “-ing.” This narrative dynamic is also found in the structural relationship between the sky and ground realms. The sky in Banghanlimjeon does not possess absolute explanatory power over the ground; rather, events on the ground can influence and produce outcomes in the sky. This structural ambiguity makes it impossible to clearly determine where Bang Gwan-ju’s life is located. In particular, by attributing her ascension to the “sin of deception,” the text links the two realms through the very performativity of deception performed by Bang Gwan-ju. Through this deception, the narrative constructs her ceaseless acts of practice and the repetition of signification and its incompletion. Ultimately, Banghanlimjeon alternates between what appear to be two opposing dimensions—its protagonist’s figuration and the structure of the sky and ground realms—while indefinitely deferring definitive explanation. In doing so, the text illustrates how Bang Gwan-ju lives through a mode of existence that is always in the now, always in the performativity—always “-ing.”
