Abstract
A lot of labor novels by KAPF writers began to be published as the 1920s approached. The proletariat such as workers, the poor, and colonized natives resisting imperialism was seamlessly represented in the early labor novels but the representation of a specific labor process was rare. In the 1930s, however, several labor novels attempted to represent things surrounding the industrial rationalization within factories in a multifaceted manner. In colonial Korea during the 1930s, under the slogan of industrial rationalization, the introduction of automated machines and the advancement of industrialization were accelerated. In addition, as industrial rationalization driven by technological innovation and a planned economy gained momentum, labor and the working class also began to be reorganized. The oppression and conflicts within factories, workers’ resistance and the subsequent recomposition of labor, triggered by industrial rationalization which was the technology of governance, were anchored in the labor novels of the era. ‘Rationalization’, as shown in industrial rationalization, became something of a buzzword and discussions on the topic evolved into a discourse, entering the spotlight. Hence, to investigate the representation of the labor process in the labor novels of the 1920s and 1930s, this paper examined the multi-layered discourses of industrial rationalization and analyzed the struggles between labor and capital surrounding ‘technology of governance/governance by technology’ as well as recomposition of labor/laborers shown in these novels. That is, the paper aimed to comprehend the labor process from the perspective of ‘class composition’, paired with the organic composition of capital, and to consider the significance of technical and political composition of the working class while paying attention to their resistance and agency.
