Abstract
This paper critically examines the accomplishments of testimonial literature, specifically those pointing to the 4・3(Jeju Uprising) and 5・18 (Gwangju Democratization Movement), against the backdrop of the current trend of naming Korean literature ‘K-Literature’ and also of Han Kang’s winning of Nobel Prize in Literature in 2024. Following the trajectory of Han Kang’s novels, it attempts a rigorous evaluation of The Vegetarian, Human Acts, and We Do Not Part, which are frequently cited as the main ground for her award. This undertaking is connected to the question of how to creatively inherit the legacy of 20th-century Korean national literature. Strictly argued from a historical perspective, Han Kang’s literature is an extension of the achievements of 20th-century Korean national literature; the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature by the Swedish Academy is a delayed, contemporary, and global recognition of that achievement arriving to us. Therefore, the works of Han Kang need further assessment in the context of historical trajectory of the national literature. As long as 5・18 Uprising reveals a vision of fraternity, solidarity, and equality—and furthermore, national reconciliation and unification—in the face of state violence and injustice, there is justification for attaching "May" to literature (i.e., May Literature). The present, in which the Earth’s ecosystem and the nature that sustains human habitats are being irreversibly destroyed, is a colossal turning point in world history. The creative response of literature to the turning point calls for a contemplation of something more fundamental. As more genuine works responding to such a call accumulate, "May" in May Literature becomes merely a device for literature rooted in concrete historical reality. Based on this critical awareness, this paper argues that the global achievement of May Literature also reveals itself as a kind of paradox; if May Literature is the achievement as such, it necessarily transcends racial and ethnic boundaries as well as gender divide by dropping off the confining word, “May.”
