Abstract

This paper examines the friendship poetry of Song Sang-gi, a representative literatus of the Noron faction, focusing on the specific features and literary significance of his works as preserved in the Ok’ojae jip(玉吾齋集). Although Song’s poems of literary friendship have occasionally been mentioned in previous scholarship, they have rarely been analyzed in a systematic and comprehensive manner. This study seeks to address that gap by investigating the various forms of his friendship poetry and elucidating their cultural and literary implications. Chapter Two provides an overview of Song’s life and literary activity, establishing the foundation for an examination of his friendship poetry. Chapter Three, Section One analyzes his ciyun(poems written by responding to given rhymes) composed in relation to his teachers, Song Jun-gil and Song Si-yeol. These works demonstrate how poetic exchange functioned as a medium for academic transmission and for consolidating literary solidarity within the teacher–disciple relationship. Section Two investigates Song’s literary interactions with his maternal relatives, including his uncles Kim Su-jeung, Kim Su-heung, and Kim Su-hang, as well as his cousins Kim Chang-hyeop, Kim Chang-heup, and Kim Chang-jip. Through these exchanges, kinship ties were extended into broader networks of literary companionship. Section Three turns to the yeonhaeng of 1697, during which Song collaborated with Choi Seok-jeong and Choi Gyu-seo in composing friendship poems in forms such as ciyun and lianju(linked-verse). These works reveal how the unique experience of diplomatic travel generated new modes of literary interaction grounded in shared historical consciousness and collective memory. Through this analysis, the study confirms that Song Sang-gi’s friendship poetry was created within intersecting contexts of scholarly succession, kinship networks, and diplomatic travel. His works illustrate that friendship poetry functioned not merely as expressions of personal sentiment, but as literary practices that reinforced academic continuity, familial solidarity, and shared historical experience. Accordingly, this paper offers a new relational perspective for understanding Song’s literary activity and contributes to broadening the scope of research on friendship poetry in late Korea.
