The Impact of Local Universites on the Popualtion and Regional Income: Empirical Evidence from Korea

이 논문은 시군구 단위에서 지역의 대학이 지역의 인구와 지역내총생산과 갖는 통계적인 관계를 통해 지역 대학의 존재가 지역사회에 주는 긍정적인 영향을 살펴본다. 229개 시군구 단위에서 대학이 많이 있거나 대학생 수가 많고 지역 인구 대비 대학생 수가 많은 지역에서 그렇지 않은 지역에 비해 인구 증가가 더 많이 이루어지고 인구가 감소할 확률도 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 이런 현상은 수도권과 광역시를 제외한 시군지역에서 더 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 2015년에서 2021년 사이의 자료에서는 지역 인구가 동일하다고 할 때 대학이나 대학생이 더 많은 지역의 지역내총생산(GRDP)이 높았던 것은 물론 2015년에 대학교수가 많았던 지역이 2015년과 2021년 사이 경제성장률이 더 높은 것으로 나타난다. 이런 실증분석 결과는 지역의 대학이 인구감소를 막고 경제를 활성화하는데 기여하였으며, 특히 수도권 외 시군에 속한 대학들이 지역의 침체를 막는 보루로서 일정 정도의 역할을 해왔음을 암시한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the positive impact of local universities on regional communities by analyzing the statistical relationships between universities, regional populations, and regional gross domestic product (GRDP) at the city and county (si- gun- gu) level in Korea. The findings indicate that regions with a high number of universities, a large student population, or a high student-to-population ratio experienced greater population growth and had a lower probability of population decline compared to regions without such characteristics. This phenomenon is particularly evident in non-metropolitan areas, excluding the capital region and large cities. Data from 2015 to 2021 shows that, assuming the same number of populaton regions with more universities or students had higher regional GDP (GRDP). Additionally, regions with more universities in 2015 experienced higher economic growth rates between 2015 and 2021. These empirical results suggest that local universities have played a role in preventing population decline and stimulating economic activity, particularly in regions outside the capital area, where universities have acted as a buffer against regional stagnation
