본 연구의 목적은 불교교육학의 정체성, 체계, 내용, 방법론에 대한 통합적 고찰을 통해 불교교육학의 학문적 기반을 구축하는 것이다. 기존 불교교육학이 겪었던‘불교학 우선 대 교육학 우선’의 이분법적 사고를 극복하기 위해 원효의 화쟁(和諍) 사상을 적용한 새로운 학문 체계를 제안한다. 이 체계는 대승기신론(大乘起信論)의삼대(三大)와 사신(四信)을 활용하여 불교교육학의 근본적인 목적, 내용, 방법론을통합적으로 제시한다. 이를 통해 ‘깨달음과 인간의 완성’, ‘교육본질의 회복’, ‘수행의 체계화’, ‘전법의 과학화’라는 네 가지 핵심 연구 영역을 도출했다. 또한 불교교육학의 목적, 내용, 방법을 구체적으로 탐색하여 불교와 교육학이 당면한 문제를 동시에 해결하고, 궁극적으로 인류와 세계문제에 대한 해결책을 제시하는 학문으로서의 역할을 모색한다. 불교교육학은 불교의 가르침을 현대적으로 재해석하고 체계적으로 전달하는 강력한 도구이며, 이를 통해 불교계가 직면한 현실적 문제들을 극복할 수 있다. 구체적으로, 불교교육학은 전법의 과학화, 수행의 체계화, 사회문제 해결 기여, 청년 불자양성, 인재 개발, 디지털 교육 프로그램 제공, 글로벌화와 확장을 통해 현대 사회에서 실용적이고 지속 가능한 학문으로 자리 잡을 수 있다. 향후에는 불교교육학 프로그램의 효과성을 검증하고, 심리학, 사회학, 디지털 기술 등과의 다학제적 연계성을강화하는 연구가 필요하다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to establish an academic foundation for Buddhist education by comprehensively examining its identity, framework, contents, and methodology. This study proposes a new academic framework that applies Wonhyo’s Hwajaeng (harmonization of disputes) philosophy to overcome the dichotomous thinking of “Buddhism first vs. pedagogy first” that has plagued existing discussions on Buddhist education. This framework utilizes the Three Greats (Samdae) and Four Faiths (Sasin) from the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana to provide an integrated perspective on the fundamental purpose, content, and methodology of Buddhist education. This approach leads to the identification of four key research areas: “realization and human perfection,” “restoration of the essence of education,” “systematization of practice,” and “scientification of Dharma transmission”. The study also explores the specific objectives, content, and methods of Buddhist education to address the challenges faced by both Buddhism and pedagogy, ultimately seeking its role as a discipline that offers solutions to global and human issues. 13th and 14th centuries, from various angles. Buddhist education serves as a powerful tool for reinterpreting and systematically transmitting Buddhist teachings in a modern context, enabling it to overcome the challenges currently faced by the Buddhist community. Specifically, Buddhist education can establish itself as a practical and sustainable discipline in contemporary society through the scientification of Dharma transmission, systematization of practice, contribution to solving social problems, nurturing young Buddhists, talent development, provision of digital education programs, and globalization. Future research should focus on verifying the effectiveness of Buddhist education programs and strengthening interdisciplinary connections with fields such as psychology, sociology, and digital technology.
