Abstract

This study aims to solidify the philosophical foundation of Korean education by analyzing the accumulated research achievements in the educational philosophies of Buddhism and Donghak, identifying research trends, and deriving future tasks. To this end, the current research landscape was examined and classification categories were established based on the research content, such as the conceptualization and systematization of educational philosophies, studies on thinkers and specific themes, research on scriptural texts, and comparative studies with other ideologies. Chronologically, research achievements after the year 2000 were primarily targeted, with the exception of pioneering papers on Buddhist or Donghak educational philosophy, regardless of the time period. The basis of Buddhist education is understanding the main core concepts taught by Buddhism, in-depth study of the scriptures, and educational application of the acquisition and practice of enlightenment. On the other hand, Donghak's education, like Buddhism, advocates the unity of the origin of the universe and human nature, and the connection between the individual and the whole, but it differs in that it emphasizes the unity of the ‘spirituality of Hanulnim’ and the ‘historical movement (Gaebyeok Movement)’. The emphasis on studying the educational thought of Korean tradition is not rooted in an exclusionary rejection of Western ideas, but rather in strengthening our intellectual capacity to effectively assimilate various philosophies. It has long been said that there is no education without nationality. If the spirit of one's own tradition, forged within the history and culture of the nation, is not embedded in education, the loss of identity will ensue, followed by a proliferation of blind imitation, ultimately diminishing the power of education.
