Abstract

The core of this paper is to theoretically demonstrate that individual oral narratives fall within the category of "oral traditions and expressions" of intangible cultural heritage. This argument is supported by the life histories of those born in the 1920s, highlighting their heritage and present-day value. This generation's oral narratives, representing the collective memory of a generation that lived through turbulent times such as the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, demonstrate the potential of cultural traditions to restore micro-level life histories and "history from below," transcending individual histories. The UNESCO Convention on the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) defines "oral traditions and expressions" as a representative field that expresses a community's identity and worldview through language. This category encompasses diverse linguistic practices such as stories, myths, epics, and proverbs, but each community autonomously determines its specific category. However, in Korea, the discourse on intangible cultural heritage has focused on performing arts, leaving the value of individual oral narratives relatively overlooked. This study examines the value and significance of personal oral narratives from multiple perspectives—historical, cultural-symbolic, social, creative, educational, and as heritage for future generations.Drawing on Jan Assmann's theory of cultural memory, this study examines the process by which individual oral narratives become the foundation of a community's memory and identity. This paper then suggests the potential for individual oral narratives to evolve beyond the one-time collection of data and into sustainable intangible cultural heritage, forming a network of communal narratives through repeated accumulation. Through this, this paper aims to re-evaluate individual oral narratives as assets of cultural memory and communication, thereby contributing to the expansion of the intangible cultural heritage discourse.
