Abstract
This study analyzes oral interview materials collected from citizens in 2024 to reinterpret the Namwon Chunhyang Festival from the perspective of intangible heritage and to elucidate its heritage-related meanings. Focusing on relational heritage, the study seeks to identify and re-evaluate the core attributes of the festival—historicity, representativeness, artistry, sociocultural value, and sustainability. Rather than viewing the festival merely as an event of play, performance, or communal gathering, this study understands it as a relational practice that connects people to one another. Intangible heritage, in this sense, is not simply the transmission of specific skills, but a performative process through which communities create bonds and sustain solidarity. The Chunhyang Festival thus embodies an expansive sense of connection that links the past, present, and future. The study is structured as follows. First, it traces the historical development of the Chunhyang Festival. Second, it examines citizens’ experiences through oral narratives to uncover the relational meanings embedded in their participation. Third, it interprets the festival’s intangible heritage value through the lens of relationality. Finally, it discusses how such relationships contribute to the festival’s future-oriented sustainability. Ultimately, this research aims to articulate the intangible heritage value of the Namwon Chunhyang Festival as a potential candidate for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. At its core lies the concept of relational solidarity—connections that bridge time and people—which constitutes the essential cultural meaning that sustains the Chunhyang Festival as a living, enduring heritage.
