(I would prefer not to)’가 지시하는 의미를 정리하고 이를 엔리케 빌라-마따스(Enrique Vila-Matas)의 『바틀비와 바틀비들(Bartleby and Company)』과의 비교 독해를 통해 확장하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper starts from Herman Melville’s short story “Bartleby, the Scrivener” and asks what Bartleby means when he repeats the sentence “I would prefer not to.” Bartleby says this line again and again. With this line, he stops doing his work. This is not just simple refusal or laziness. His words break the normal way we think about the subject, will, and language. The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, in his essay “Bartleby, or On Contingency,” explains Bartleby’s behavior as a kind of potentiality. In this paper, I first analyze Melville’s text and show how Bartleby’s sentence makes the lawyer narrator fail to understand and fail to ‘read’ him. The narrator wants to explain Bartleby, but every attempt fails. Then I move to Enrique Vila-Matas’s novel Bartleby and Company. This book is made of footnotes about writers who stopped writing. It looks like a list of “writers who stopped writing” but I argue that it is more than that. I claim that Bartleby and Company is not only an experimental form or a simple collection of cases of silence and stopping. It is a space of possibility where literature thinks about its own conditions of existence. Through the figure of Bartleby, Vila-Matas shows how “not writing” can also be a way for literature to remain open and not exhaust itself. In this sense, stopping writing (silence, refusal, breaking off) can be read as a new ontological form of literature a way for literature to renew and remake itself. Another characteristic of this work lies in shifting the semiosis experience onto the interpretive subjects themselves. The suspension of inquiry into the relationship between sign and object is caused by interpretive subjects who turn away from the problems of reality. Particularly the scenes that starkly reveal characters participating in escapist realities despite recognizing these problems particularly highlight the author's unique narrative strategy. This is because the narrator positions oneself as the subject of criticism through self-revelatory statements exposing the own flaws. This strategy dynamically emphasizes that the problems of the divided reality are tasks requiring resolution through the practice of all community members.
