Abstract
Cultural identity emerges through the continuous interplay between being and becoming. Korean American writers with dual identities often demonstrate a profound connection to Korean culture, utilizing it as a foundational resource for their work. Writing about memories of Korean culture serves as a vital means of expressing their identity, reflecting the subtle yet significant influence of Korean culture on their lives. Michelle Zauner, a prominent voice in 21st-century Korean American literature, delves into these themes in Crying in H Mart. By portraying H Mart as an emotional sanctuary for the Korean American community and food as a conduit for cultural connection, Zauner investigates the complexities of her diasporic identity and the role of cultural memory in shaping identity while embracing a dual cultural heritage. Drawing on Stuart Hall’s theory of cultural identity, this paper underscores the transformative power of memory in shaping identity and bridging cultural divides.
