Abstract

This article aims to examine Michelle Zauner's autobiographical memoir Crying in H Mart, focusing on Korean food as medicine, a means of communication, and a process of healing. The author describes what Korean food meant to her and her mother after her mother’s death, confirming the love her mother had for her through her mother’s belief in and practice of the healing power of Korean food. After her mother's passing, the author gradually frees herself from the guilt of not having taken better care of her mother and realizes that she and her mother are still connected in some way through the confidence and immersion she gains from making Korean food herself. In this work, the food her mother prepared for her significantly impacts the author's growth process. Cooking and sharing food are closely linked to affectionate communication with her mother and the healing of guilt. After her mother's death, experiencing and cooking Korean food becomes an indispensable experience for the author, giving her confidence in her identity as a Korean and realizing her mother still communicates with her from within. In this autobiographical memoir, Korean food and cooking play a crucial role in communicating with her mother and healing the grief of losing her.
