재미 한인 시문학에 나타난 디아스포라 의식의 양상 - 『워싱턴문학』과 『시향』을 중심으로

이 연구는 재미 한인의 한국어 시문학에 나타난 디아스포라 의식의 양상을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 미국 동부 지역 중심으로 꾸준히 간행되고 있는 종합 문예지 워싱턴문학과 시전문 계간지 시향에 수록되어 있는 시작품을 대상으로 하여 재미 한인의 시문학에 나타난 디아스포라 의식의 특성과 지향을 파악하고자 한다. 해외 이주 한인들의 한국어 문학은 이주 시기나 이주 지역의 특성에 따른 차이에도 불구하고 몇 가지 공통되는 어려움을 안고 있다. 즉 이들 해외 한인들은 이중 언어의 문제, 이중 문화의 문제, 그리고 이중 소외의 문제 속에서 문학 행위로서 한국어 글쓰기를 시도해야 하는 처지에 있다. 이러한 어려움은 재미 한인 문학의 경우도 예외가 아니다. 재미 한인의 한국어 시문학 작품들은 이국에 정착하는 과정에서 겪어야 하는 여러 가지 어려움과 소외, 인종적 편견과 차별 등을 이방인으로서 디아스포라 의식의 형상화로 그려내고 있다. 이 작품들에 나타난 디아스포라 의식의 특성과 양상은 대략 세 가지로 정리될 수 있다. 첫째, 재미 한인의 시문학 작품들은 모국어에 대한 새삼스러운 애착과 재인식의 표출을 통해 자신의 뿌리를 확인하고자 한다. 둘째, 이들의 작품에는 모국에서의 삶과 고향에 대한 향수의 감각이 표출되는데 이 감각은 특히 전통 음식과 관련된 기억의 서사를 통해 두드러진다. 셋째, 재미 한인 시문학 작품들은 디아스포라 문학에서 제기되는 정체성의 혼란이나 상대적 박탈감 등의 이방인 의식을 다문화적 삶에 대한 이해와 공감의 정서를 통해 치유하고 극복하고자 한다. 해외 거주 한인의 한국어 문학은 현지에서 주목받지 못하면서 동시에 모국에서도 주변부로 밀려나 있다는 현실적 어려움을 안고 있다. 그렇지만 이들의 문학 활동은 무엇보다도 진솔한 체험을 바탕으로 모국어에 대한 애착과 삶의 현장성이 함께하는 정체성의 탐색을 보여주고 있다는 점에서 한국문학의 깊이와 확산에 이바지하는 의의가 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and aspects of diaspora consciousness in Korean American poetry literature. To this end, this study attempted to understand the characteristics and orientation of diaspora consciousness in Korean poetry literature by targeting the Korean Literature of Washington, a comprehensive literary magazine, and the Fragrance of Poetry, a quarterly poetry magazine, which are consistently published in the eastern United States. Korean literature that migrated abroad has several common difficulties despite the differences depending on the timing of migration or the characteristics of the migration region. In other words, Korean literature that migrated abroad should try to write as a literary act amid the problem of bilingualism, biculturalism, and bilingual alienation. This difficulty is no exception to Korean-American literature. Korean poetry literature works by Korean Americans depict various difficulties and alienation, racial prejudice and discrimination in the form of diaspora consciousness as strangers. The characteristics and aspects of diaspora consciousness in these works can be summarized into approximately three categories. First, Korean American poetry literature works try to confirm their roots through the expression of renewed attachment and re-recognition to their mother tongue. Second, in their works, a sense of nostalgia for life in their home country and hometown is expressed, which is particularly prominent through narratives of memories related to traditional food. Third, Korean American poetry works try to heal and overcome the consciousness of strangers, such as confusion of identity or relative deprivation, raised in diaspora literature through understanding and empathy for multicultural life. The Korean literature of Koreans living abroad is not receiving attention in the region, but at the same time, it has a real difficulty in being pushed to the periphery in their home country. However, their literary activities are of great significance in the depth and spread of Korean literature in that they show a search for identity that combines attachment to their mother tongue and the reality of life based on honest experiences.
