Abstract
Eyewitness statements are subject to error due to memory variability. In particular, verbal statements prior to the identification procedure may induce a verbal shield effect that reduces identification accuracy. However, in practice, it is difficult to conduct an identification procedure without listening to eyewitness statements. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine whether the quantity of verbal statements makes a difference in identification accuracy and whether eyewitness confidence affects the relationship between the quantity of statements and identification accuracy. The experiment consisted of assigning participants who watched a video of shoplifting to a verbal statement and a no-statement condition, and then asked them to identify the perpetrator they saw based on their confidence in their memory. The results showed that the misidentification group made significantly more verbal statements than the correct identification group, and that the rate of misidentification was higher with more statements, and the likelihood of misidentification increased with more statements. Confidence did not affect identification accuracy, but it had a significant effect on the relationship between statement volume and identification accuracy: high confidence increased the likelihood of correct identification in the low-statement condition and increased the likelihood of incorrect identification in the high-statement condition. These results suggest that verbal statement quantity can trigger the linguistic curtain effect and that confidence acts as a moderator of this relationship. Therefore, it is important to consider both the quantity of verbal statements and the level of confidence of eyewitnesses in investigations to improve identification accuracy.
