The First Indochina War or generally called Vietnam War began in 1946 until May 7, 1954 between Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and France. The Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the most representative symbol of the victory of East against the West, is an unprecedented event in the process of decolonization. Especially, it was very revolutionary that the powerful French elite troops with strong equipments and troops was defeated by colony Vietnam`s national liberation movement. At the end of 1953, the French troops, losing to the Vietnam Independence Alliance who had strong support from the public, blocked the nationalist`s supply route to Laos. The battle was started as soon as the French troops had occupied Dien Bien Phu in order to establish a foothold. About 10,000 of French army surrendered and 5,000 soldiers died. The battle had a serious impact on the French troops and also gave national shame. After the battle, with overlapping the Algerian crisis, France Fourth Republic collapsed in 1958
