The purpose of this paper is to identify the meaning and characteristics of 'nation' and 'nationalism' in Vietnam. This paper distinguishes the process of the formation and development of the nationalism based on each period. The period was specifically divided into as follows : the period of Independence from Chinese Rule, the period of French colony, the period from the First World War to the 2nd World War, the period of Vietnam War, the period of Socialist Republic of Vietnam after its unification in 1975, the period of the present day after Doi Moi in 1986. In addition, this paper examines the role of the nationalism in Vietnam in each period, and forecasts its roles and directions to go in the future.
