초록

The study originates from curiosity as to why Choseon, the country that prospered for 200 years after its foundation, had to helplessly go through neighboring Japan's invasion, had its capital captured in less than about 20 days. Accordingly, the purpose of the study is to get to the bottom of how Choseon analyzed the possibility of the war with Japan and political situation at the time through indications of war and intelligence activities and why the state considered Japan's invasion was off the table before the outbreak of the war. Furthermore, the study delves into at which point Choseon recognized the possibility of a war and started preparing for it, and how effectively, especially from a military perspective, efforts to deter the war and military readiness were pursued. The study shows that Japan, the country that started the war, was well-equipped with mighty military with the closure of 100-years-long Sengoku Period. In contrast, Choseon was too weak and was hardly prepared to make a response. Only after Choseon missions to Japan came back from Japan, did it actually start to grasp situational awareness and prepare itself for the war. However, this, too, did not last long due to factional strifes over party interests and the escalating grievances of its people. The whole country ushered in a war without practical preparations accompanied by transition into the war readiness posture. From a perspective that history repeats itself, Im-jin War is considered to be still giving us invaluable lessons in terms of security environments surrounding the Korean peninsula. The peninsula is in dire need to make a clear-cut judgments and strategic assessments not only on its neighboring nations, but also on the North's political affairs We must equip ourselves with situational awareness and collect national power.
