Abstract

Although more than 67 years have passed since the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Turkiye in 1957, cultural and literary exchanges in the field of the Humanities have not yet developed at the same pace. Most Korean literary works translated into Turkish are limited to just 73 volumes during the period. In contrast, over 200 literary works have been translated from Korean into Russian although diplomatic relations between Korea and Russia were only about 33 years old. Considering the significance of creating, translating, and publishing texts for children, hence, this study aims to investigate the current situation of Turkish translations of Korean literary works. According to the findings, the number of translated works includes approximately 15 novels for young readers, around 55 novels for adults, and three works in other genres. The online data uploaded by the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, however, indicate that those 73 works were not properly translated from Korean to Turkish. That is, some of them have still been translated through double translation. Korean children's literature, in particular, has not yet been properly introduced, actively translated, and published in Turkey although there are many outstanding works representing “Korea(n)’ uniqueness” in Korean children's literature. The lack of interest among translators, publishers, and readers in Korean children's literature results in such fundamental problems. The translation should be done after a deep understanding of “Korea(n)’ uniqueness” in Korean literary works rather than through or by double translation. In other words, the original Korean text should not be misinterpreted or mistranslated due to double translation as it often leads to the creation of entirely different or incorrect text with a completely deviated meaning. (Everyone engaged in translating Korean literary works needs to pay attention to this issue and take the necessary measures).
