Abstract

This study aims to analyze how child-oriented content on the YouTube platform either upholds or violates children's rights, based on the four core rights outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC): the right to survival, protection, development, and participation. To this end, three representative types of domestic YouTube channels-toy review, family vlog, and child-led creator content-were selected. Four representative videos from each channel (a total of 12) were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The find ings revealed multiple ethical concerns, including the portrayal of children as passive consumers lacking agency, the exposure of their privacy and emotional vulnerability, an imbalance of information related to commercial exploitation, and the evasion of responsibility by content creators and platforms. Drawing on Bang Jung-hwan’s philosophy of respect for children, this study underscores the need to view children not merely as objects of protection but as active rights-holders in the digital era. Based on this perspective, the study suggests institutional and educational strategies that place children's rights at the center of content production and distribution.
