동화극 <한네레의 죽음>에 드러난 방정환의 문학관

이 연구는 하우프트만의 <한넬레의 승천>을 수용한 방정환의 동화극 <한네레의 죽음>을 방정환의 문학 지형 속에서 그 의미를 탐색하였다. 방정환은 연애소설에서 가부장적 혼인제도 속에서 고통받거나 죽음에 이르는 여성들을 통해 사회의 모순을 비판하였다. 방정환이 연애소설에서 반복적으로 사용한 ‘자매’ 인물 설정 및 여성의 ‘자살’ 모티프와 주제 의식이 <한네레의 죽음>에서도 드러난다는 사실은 동화 번역이 소설 창작과 이어져 있음을 시사한다. 방정환이 소설 창작을 멈추고 동화를 번역했던 시기에 쓴 글들을 참조하면, 방정환의 문학관은 모순된 사회에서 학대받는 불쌍한 민중을 구원하는 것이 핵심이며, 방정환은 소설 창작 과정에서 직면한 한계를 동화의 낭만성을 경유함으로써 돌파하고자 했다. 하우프트만의 <한넬레의 승천>은 ‘모순된 사회 현실의 발견과 사회적 동정심, 그리고 구원’이라는 방정환의 지향점과 일치하는 작품으로 선택되었으며 <한네레의 죽음>으로 수용되었다. 비록 1923년 천도교소년회의 동화극대회에서 공연된 <한네레의 죽음>은 무대와 객석의 상호작용이 이루어지지 않았지만, 아동 문화운동이 확산되면서 <한네레의 죽음>의 존재 가치는 가시화되었다.
Abstract
This study explored the meaning of Bang Jung-hwan’s fairy tale The Death of Hannere, which accepted Hauptmann’s The Ascension of Hannele. In his romantic novels, Bang Jung-hwan criticized the contradictions of society through women who suffered or died within the patriarchal marriage system. The fact that the character setting of ‘sisters’ and female's ‘suicide’ motifs and theme rituals, which Bang Jung-hwan repeatedly used in his romantic novels, are also revealed in The Death of Hannele suggests that the translation of fairy tales is connected to the creation of novels. Referring to the writings of Bang Jung-hwan during the period when he stopped writing novels and translated fairy tales, Bang Jung-hwan’s view of literature is centered on saving the poor people who are abused in a contradictory society. Bang Jung-hwan attempted to overcome the limitations faced in the process of creating a novel by going through the romanticism of fairy tales. The Ascension of Hannele was selected as a work consistent with Bang Jung- hwan’s direction of ‘iscovering the contradictory social reality, social sympathy, and salvation’ and was accepted as The Death of Hannere. Although the first performance The Death of Hannele(1923) did not interact between the stage and the audience, the value of The Death of Hannele became visible as the children's cultural movement spread.
