Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to trace the changes in postcolonial memory culture that have unfolded in Germany over the past century through the Anti-Colonial Monument in Bremen. The history of this monument is represented as three key years. 1932 is the year of ‘memory-making’, marking the birth of the Imperial Colonial Honour Monument, which encapsulated the desire to recover the colonies lost due to the Treaty of Versailles. 1990 is the year of ‘memory-reversal’, when the identity transitioned from a colonial monument to an anti-colonial monument. The fact that this transition, prompted by the independence of Namibia, Germany’s former colony, occurred in the same year as German reunification may be coincidental. However, it is also true that a unified Germany, tasked with establishing a new national identity, has been able to adopt a more progressive stance in its postcolonial efforts than before. Finally, 2009 is the year of ‘memory-expansion’, marked by the establishment of the Ohamakari Memorial next to the Anti-Colonial Monument to commemorate the victims of the Herero War, showing the current efforts of German civil society to confront the colonial past.
